Set in the glorious countryside of the South Downs, Petersfield is an ancient market town originally built as a Norman 'new town' at the end of the 11th Century. It is now a pleasant place for shopping and eating out.
The main square is an attractive focal point providing the perfect venue for twice weekly markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays. There is a Farmers' Market on the first Sunday of every month. At its centre stands the magnificent equestrian statue of King William III. The Church of St. Peter dates back to 1120 and retains many original features.
The Petersfield Festivities take place in the market square over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Petersfield has a vibrant musical and artistic scene. The Petersfield Musical Festival is a week-long musical extravaganza in March, and has taken place since 1901. Music, art and drama can be enjoyed at Bedales Arts in nearby Steep. The town was also once the home and studio of local artist Flora Twort.
A small museum, situated in the 19th century Court House behind the town's Police Station, gives the local history of Petersfield and the surrounding area.
Nearby, Butser Ancient Farm is a fascinating place to visit. Elevated upon the South Downs, with fine panoramic views to the sea is the historic house of Uppark. Also worth a visit is Stansted Park, either to see the house and grounds or on one of their special event days; Hollycombe Steam Fair, near Liphook; and Hinton Ampner Garden near Bramdean. There are numerous walks and cycle rides in the area, in particular at Queen Elizabeth Country Park.
Further afield a trip to Portsmouth for a visit to the Historic Dockyard is possible. Or go to the cathedral cities of Chichester or Winchester.
