Hampshire's landscape is a rich fabric of contrasts and the beauty of some of England's most inspiring countryside can easily be experienced on foot. Open downlands, tranquil valleys, charming villages, lowland heaths, ancient woodlands and an attractive coastline can all be explored on Hampshire's 3,000 miles of footpaths, bridleways and byways.
Hampshire has a network of 11 long distance routes for the more serious walker, including the Clarendon Way from Winchester to Salisbury and the Wayfarer's Walk from Portsmouth to the Berkshire Border. Maps and leaflets of short and circular walks are also available to download free.
A variety of guided walks have been organised around the county by a number of organisations. If you are interested in walks around Hampshire's towns, cities or the countryside then this is a great way to discover even more about the area with a local guide on hand to bring the countryside to life with their knowledge and enthusiasm. Details of forthcoming guided walks in the North East of the county can be found on the Hart District Council website.
You can follow Jane Austen's footsteps through a circular walk from Chawton to Farringdon and there is also the Jane Austen Trail, a walking route from Alton High Street to Chawton. The Edward Thomas circular walk has stunning views of the South Downs and hangers. It is a 4 mile circular walk and the area round Steep near Petersfield which was an inspiration for the poet.

Hampshire is home to the three cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester, all of which have some extremely insightful and historical walks that take you around the cities.
