Royal Navy Submarine Museum

Add Royal Navy Submarine Museum to your Itinerary

Royal Navy Submarine Museum

HMS Alliance has reopened after a closure of two months whilst essential conservation work as part of the Saving HMS Alliance project progresses. A huge effort by staff and volunteers was made to clean her up after months of dirt, dust and debris from the conservation work.

Dive into history at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, go onboard our submarines and meet a real submariner to hear his stories about living beneath the waves.

Set on the site on the submarine service’s 20th century base on the Gosport side of Portsmouth Harbour, the museum is home to the Royal Navy’s very first submarine Holland 1 launched in 1901, recognised as a marvel of engineering. Discover the only surviving WW2 submarines remaining in the UK, the mighty HMS Alliance and midget submarine, X24. Explore our galleries to find out the thrilling stories of the heroes who have served in submarines.

This family friendly museum has working periscopes, hands on interactive games, the “Horrible Science of Submarines” exhibition and for 2013 a brand new family play centre “Busy Boat Bay”. Try out the underwater escape interactive and submerge a submersible with our working buoyancy exhibit.

Meet Sammie Sardine in our Horrible Science of Submarines exhibition and find out how smelly submariners were, the ghastly food they ate and how sub loos could turn into poo fountains!

Complete your visit with a frothy coffee and a sticky cake at the Harbour Stations coffee shop overlooking Portsmouth Harbour.

Open everyday during school holidays (Christmas* & February Half term).

Last Admission 1 hr before closing. Christmas closure 24, 25, 26 December.
