Visit Jane Austen House Museum, Alton, Winchester and more ...
Old Timbers bed and breakfast is within walking distance of the home where Jane Austen lived and wrote many of her famous novels. Opposite is Chawton House Library, a unique collection of books and papers, set in the house of Jane Austen's brother. Visitors travel from around the world to walk in the same picturesque Hampshire villages and across the rolling Hampshire countryside that inspired this timeless writing. You can walk to Chawton across fields in 25 minutes along a marked walk.
The Gilbert White House and Garden
In nearby Selborne, there is the Gilbert White House and Garden where Gilbert White became the first person to study nature, cataloguing in a scientific way and documenting his findings in his work, "The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne", published in 1789 and later referenced by Charles Darwin.
The Watercres Line Steam Railway
The Watercress Line Steam railway operates a busy schedule, taking visitors from Alton through Hampshire to the market town of Alresford with its delightful shops, pubs and watercress festival. Alton is on the mainline route from London Waterloo, just over an hour from London, making it a wonderful escape from the city for a peaceful, romantic break.
Portsmouth and Nelson's Victory
Alton is an ideal location from which to visit historic Portsmouth with its naval shipyard and Nelson's flagship, The Victory. It is a wonderful experience as you walk through the restored ship that won at the Battle of Waterloo and where Lord Horatio Nelson fell.
Historic Winchester
Alton is just 25 minutes from Winchester, previously the capital of Saxon England. The 900 year old cathedral, King Arthur's Great Hall and Round Table, as well as its shops and restaurants make it a very popular destination for our guests.
