The White Horse Hotel
The White Horse Hotel & Brasserie originated in the 12th century as a guesthouse for the local abbey. Most of the original building has been consigned to history, with only the stone cellars and a few ovens surviving a renovation in Tudor times.
Although the building has changed, the name has not, and The White Horse has the distinction of being amongst a select group of only 12 hotels that have served in the hospitality industry continuously since the 14th century.
If we were to rewind to the 1940’s the front of the building was organised in much the same way you see today, with the Tudor Lounge and the new Palmerston room both set up as comfortable lounges. The Oak Hall, where today you will find the reception, was the kitchen and the modern kitchen was a ballroom.
In more recent times, The White Horse reopened its doors after a lengthy and sympathetic renovation in June 2008. With the aim of offering affordable luxury, the newly rebranded hotel can now boast 31 stylishly redesigned bedrooms. The bar and brasserie were both modernised, as was the kitchen. The result: a unique blending of the character and charm of this historical building with the fresh, vibrant atmosphere of a modern boutique hotel.
