On the western banks of the Lymington River, having wended its way through the sun-dappled glades of the New Forest to find the Solent, lies the beautiful Georgian market town of Lymington.

Lymington has been an illustrious seaport for centuries and was once well-known for its shipbuilding and salt harvesting enterprises. Today, its three sparkling marinas offer berths to the many residents and visiting yachts seen docked in its harbour, tell-tale signs of the town’s vibrant sailing community. In fact, it was the gleaming Solent waters that were the training ground for local hero and five-time Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie; a letter box painted gold in celebration of his achievements can be found at the bottom of the town’s bustling high street.

Lymington’s ancient origins can be traced back to the dyke and mounds that once formed the outer defences of its Iron Age fort, known locally as Buckland Rings. When the Jutes prevailed from the Isle of Wight in the 6th century they founded a settlement called Limentun, and by the time of the Norman conquests this once sparsely populated enclave had grown into a flourishing port.

Today, the characterful, cobbled streets of Lymington are lined with artisan shops, galleries and boutiques, whilst the town’s weekly market is filled with stalls selling everything from garden plants to home-baked cakes. Lymington also plays host to a fleet of elegant restaurants, cosy tea rooms, charming cafés and stylish bistros. Lanes of Lymington, with its sleek balconies and intimate alcoves, has all the pizazz of a top London outlet, while the award-winning Elderflower on Quay Street boasts one of the finest a la carte menus in the region.

Holidays in Lymington can be easily filled with a variety of family-friendly activities, from sunset cruises and stand up paddle boarding to harbourside strolls and coastal rambles. During the sunnier months, the town hosts a number of gala events including the ever-popular Lymington Seafood Festival, a lively July carnival, regattas and regular sailing jamborees. Listen to some summer jazz in the bandstand gardens before a dip in the town’s historic sea water baths, renowned for its rejuvenating mud minerals, and if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a short walk to the marshes and lagoons of Keyhaven Nature Reserve is a must.

Lymington has its own railway station with mainline links from London Waterloo to nearby Brockenhurst. There are also regular bus services with links to the coastal resort of Bournemouth and the maritime city of Southampton, plus, you’ll also be able to pick up the New Forest tour bus and enjoy an open-top safari. If you’ve had your fill of landlubbing, a quick channel hop on the car and passenger ferry to the Isle of Wight might be just the ticket.

The Ship Inn - Lymington
(Less than a mile)

(36)

In a superb location on the town’s quay with large decking area to the side - great for watching the world go by. The bar is well stocked, with an impressive selection of drinks. Due to being on the quay, the pub can get busy, so if you want to eat it’s worth booking ahead. The food is great, a step above the usual pub fare and comes in generous, hearty portions.

A nice late evening family meal was taken here. Ok Pub, A bit quiet but very spacious. Overpriced like most things in the New Forest and waitress could have been a bit less open with her comments to one of our party who was made to feel a bit embarrassed as the only person ordering a starter.

February 2024

Had a very nice Sunday lunch here. Pleasant staff, and nice surroundings.

October 2023

We had two meals in the pub during our holiday - the restaurant was really busy so we sat in the pub - the food was really nice and we didn’t have to wait too long.

Great service , food and staff

September 2023

Poor and slow service with no proper management of order taking, and floor service.

September 2023

We were disappointed with the service, waiting a long time for desserts and with two young boys this was not ideal. Food descriptions not very accurate. One order was the Massaman curry which was not as expected and the chicken, bacon and avocado salad had no avocado!

Lovely drinks on the decking just by the water. Excellent service. Food looked delicious.

April 2023

If you get the chance, do book to go here. Although it can be quite expensive, it is well worth the experience

October 2022

Rather pretentious and did not really cater for non-meat eaters. Very over-priced.

August 2021

You have to book well in advance to eat here. Was on their waiting list for about a month, and luckily managed to get in through a cancellation. Food excellent. We went for the 7 courses with pairing wine. Once you are seated,, its your table for the whole evening. A lovely experience

June 2021

We enjoyed dinner here last week during our stay in Lymington. It was absolutely delicious. We chose the 7 course tasting menu and all dishes were fantastic. I especially enjoyed the crispy hen egg and the forest floor pudding which was very clever and an extremely pretty dish. We also treated ourselves to the wine pairing and each wine matched its course perfectly. A wonderful evening.

The Kings Head
(Less than a mile)

This distinguished town centre pub crowns the cobbled street leading to the town quay. Dating back over 300 years, the interior is both atmospheric and comfortable. There’s a large, roaring log fire to welcome guests on chilly days and pretty courtyard garden for when the sun shines. The bar is well stocked, featuring Cask Marque approved Fullers London Pride, Ringwood Best Bitter, Timothy Taylors Landlord, Youngs and HSB. Expect traditional pub food and light bites, plus a separate menu dedicated to vegetarians.

December 2023

A warm and welcoming pub with a real fire. Great food and drink, A 15 minute walk from the flat (slightly more if the level crossing is down!), or else park in town.

November 2023

I began my 70th birthday celebrations here in November 2022 - only to find another 70th birthday girl in the adjoining area!! She shared a piece of her cake with me & we sang along together. The service was excellent; great beers & food delicious. Would thoroughly recommend.

October 2023

We visited this pub twice during our holiday and each time we really enjoyed our meals - especially the sea bass! Service was good and staff were very friendly - even though we arrived one busy night without booking a table, they managed to fit us in without a problem.

Excellent food and service. Steak and Ale pie and Red Snapper were fabulous. Booked ahead as gets very busy.

August 2022

A proper English pub, we popped in for a couple of drinks. It's not cheap but I think you have to factor in an extra few pounds a round for the wonderful atmosphere inside.

Great pub with v good beer and lovely pub food. V friendly and helpful staff. V well managed in terms of managing social distancing.

July 2021

superb Sunday roast - we've enjoyed both take-away and sit-in over the years.

June 2021

Due to lock down restrictions we were unable, this time, to visit the restaurant. However, we did try the take away service on two occasions and both times the food was excellent and the presentation and service first class.

May 2021

Our favourite pub in the heart of Lymington. A warm & welcoming atmosphere, lovely staff and hearty portions of good pub grub.

October 2020

Such a pretty pub. Lots of nooks and crannies, colourful cushions and friendly staff. We had lunch here and the steak and ale pie was just what the doctor ordered on a chilly autumn day. Comfort food on a plate. Portions are extremely generous and even though we only shared a starter , sadly we couldn’t finish our main meals. Would highly recommend.

October 2020

Ate here twice during our recent visit to Lymington. Staff were welcoming and friendly, the pub was comfortable and warm and the food was absolutely delicious on both occasions. The best burger my husband has had in a long time, so he said and I could eat plate after plate of the brie starter!

October 2020

Nice cosy pub but staff's attitude was disappointing.

November 2019

This is a good local pub, we ate their twice in a week. Friendly service and really good staff. It was off season so we didn’t book, but I guess in summer booking to eat would be required.

June 2019

Food and staff really good but the seats were filthy and need changing urgently

June 2019

Lovely atmospheric pub. Dog friendly. Best Steak and Ale Pie I have ever had, served with excellent fresh vegetables and cracking chips! This was the only place during our stay in Lymington where we ate twice, going back especially on our last night.

March 2019

Quite pleasant,food good

September 2018

Great little boozer. I could happily sit in there all evening chatting and drinking! Menu looked ok although we didn't eat. It's got lots of small sections which adds to the atmosphere but isn't ideal for kids and prams. We went without the kids and loved it. Great playlist in the background too!

July 2017

Stopped for a drink, nice cosy pub, would be lovely in the winter with the fires lit. Perfect location if you are staying in Lymington.

June 2017

Beautiful traditional pub. Food was good. They had a children's menu but no high chair or baby changing facilities

Nice pub, good for watching sport. Only issue is the eye watering drinks prices.

February 2024

We didn't like this pub. We went for a meal but they insisted they take a credit card swipe before opening a tab. This gave us the impression that we were untrustworthy. I have never been asked for a credit card swipe at a pub ever before. Also, I was served a short measure of beer. A long way short of a full pint. When I politely asked for it to be topped up this was done very begrudgingly. Overall it was a bad experience and I could not recommend it.

September 2023

Bit disappointing. The "lovely beer garden" is now covered by a large smokers shelter, with nowhere else to sit outside on a warm summer's evening

June 2023

Good food and friendly staff.

June 2023

A great location with a super ambience. Great fish and chip super.

April 2023

test

December 2022

Very welcoming and really tasty food. We loved the light bites as we didn’t always want a big meal in the evening.

June 2022

Strolled round the corner from Talbot Cottage to sample the ale at my first Lymington pub. It was mid afternoon in October so the pub was quiet but very spacious. Immediately outside was a heated area - very handy for my smoker husband!! A large marquee with gorgeous greenery provided plenty of seating. Very friendly barman. Passed the Bosun’s Chair in the evening & it was heaving! A popular place indeed!

January 2022

We had a very enjoyable meal at the Bosun's Chair (recommended by the property). The beer is excellent and the food was extremely good quality 'pub grub'.

July 2021

Great food and service. Best burger we have had in a long time. Bonus as outside heaters.

May 2021

Very good ambiance and staff, definitely worth a visit.

September 2020

Refurbishment very well done. An excellent pub in every way. - even though Lymington prices are way above those in Lincolnshire!

March 2020

October 2023

Brilliant Museum and the cafe is excellent

September 2023

Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.

September 2023

Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.

August 2022

A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries

May 2022

Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!

October 2021

Well worth spending a morning learning about the history of Lymington and the wider New Forest area. There is always an interesting pop up exhibition too. The cafe is great and serves lovely home made food.

October 2021

Wonderful 1833 pool - I preferred the 20 degree temperature to the stifling 30 degree in the Leisure Centre. Very friendly staff. The most spacious pool I've swum in anywhere. Swam here most days £4.00 for two hours a bargain.

September 2023

We swam here pretty much every morning of our stay that it was open. Good value for general swimming - the more expensive inflatables course looked like great fun but we didn't try it ourselves. Such a good way to start the day, and a great facility for the town as there's no beach. Would have been even better if it opened earlier or later in the day.

September 2023

We spent an afternoon there and the children enjoyed the inflatables. The weather was good. Changing rooms not clearly signed though.

August 2023

Brilliant place loved it although water was bracing

August 2023

This is a must for everyone, especially for teenagers who love a challenge. We left our two on the assault course for 2 hours whilst we wandered the salt marshes on the Solent Way nearby. The ice cream kiosk next to the baths is value for money too and sells the local ice cream with generous portions.

August 2022

Planning to go there as looked good with all the fun equipment you could hire but found the cost for a family of six (two adults, four children) too expensive so did not go after all.

August 2021

We had a great time on the inflatables one morning. My son loved it! Friendly staff and good to hire wet suits.

August 2021

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.

December 2017

Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc

November 2017

Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.

June 2023

Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.

April 2019

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(8 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Highcliffe Castle Beach

A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.

February 2024

Could do with a proper freezer. Absolutely loved it. wonderful view and wonderful apartment which is very well kept.

January 2024

We had a fab stay, it was perfect for us, the location, parking, and the use of the garage, which meant we could leave our muddy boots in there along with golf clubs that we brought to play a round. We really appreciated the Christmas decorations, which were very festive without going over the top. The views of the quay and the ferries operating gave it a very holiday feel. The highlight for us ( and something I now have to purchase was the redlining chairs ,my son thought that they were great) he is 27!!!

November 2023

We love this place! Several visits the year and it is so relaxing watching the river and harbour. The flat is very well-equipped. The addition of a dishwasher is a real plus.

November 2023

The flat was small (as expected) but very luxurious, modern and comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped. The view over the Marina with the Isle of Wight in the distance was breath taking. I was happy just sitting on the balcony watching boats coming and going and the IoW ferry too. There was always something going on out there, loved it. We had a day out on the IoW and took the car, this is a must as the ferry terminal is just around the corner. We will definitely be returning next year.

October 2023

Excellent accommodation, Lovely balcony, one downside track in from road pot holed, parking ideal. Top marks. R & B Mills

October 2023

Excellent place to stay having visited several times and intend to return

October 2023

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay. It is the third time that I have stayed there (previously booked by David Satchell). The views from the flat are lovely, and being away from the bustle of the town is a plus. Just a short walk to the town, or the station and ferry port. A couple of points: on our arrival the patio door was unlocked (but closed) and in both bathrooms the (empty) waste bin had been left on top of the toilet seat - all clean though! On previous occasions the owner has left a bottle of wine as a welcome gift - I appreciate that this is the owner and not THC, but I wonder whether this was an oversight? But all minor points - we will definitely be returning before very long.

July 2023

The apartment was excellent with lovely view. I am looking forward to booking again next year.

June 2023

Really enjoyed our week in the apartment and wouldn’t hesitate to book again

May 2023

Difficult to reach areas could benefit from some attention with cleaning. This was our third visit and we love it here. Recommended.

October 2022

We found the hot water on the kitchen sink became very fast vestry quickly.

July 2022

We loved the apartment location and the view from the balcony

June 2022

Enjoyed stay very much. A small problem with flying insect bites (possibly midges). Needed ventilation in the evening due to warm weather.

June 2022

Enjoyed our stay also the excellent food at The Ferryman pub. Also worth a visit The Noisy Lobster at Avon Beach Christchurch for seafood and Exbury Gardens for a day out

May 2022

Very much so. Definitely intend on returning.

May 2022

We enjoyed our stay at Island Point. The toilet seat in the bathroom needs looking at as it moves around and does not stay in place. We had difficulty with the key safe. Firstly when we arrived getting keys out of the key safe and when we left we couldn't get the key safe closed. Fortunately the Cleaner who had been sitting in her car came over and managed to get keys in safe and closed.

March 2022

We had a lovely week and the weather was really good making it possible to take advantage of the lovely balcony and views. We are early birds and therefore the 6am train didn't bother us. A great week's holiday!

March 2022

We did - the property was clean and comfortable and well-located for walks along the coast. We would use it again. One thing - we failed to follow the correct procedure for finding the keys and had to disturb the owner and get a call-out only to find we were looking in the wrong place. Our fault for sure after a long tedious journey and arriving in the pitch dark but perhaps the instructions should be absolutely clear by suggesting the key box by the front door should be ignored. Please pass our apologies to the owner for disturbing him.

December 2021

We did enjoy our stay, but do need to mention person upstairs has a drum machine/ kit. Friday night from 6.20 to 7.00 they were playing/practising the drums and then added music as well. It was so loud! Saturday afternoon we arrived back after 2 p.m. and luckily only got the tail end we assumed of a drum session and again on Sunday when we came back from Bucklers Hard a short burst. Very thoughtless to play drums in a block of flats, especially as signs also suggest there are vulnerable/ elderly residents?.

November 2021

Ideal location, we very much enjoyed our stay.

November 2021

Very clean

October 2021

Big improvements since we last came- will be back

September 2021

This is a compact property – but we knew this when we booked, in a lovely private location and with a fabulous balcony view over the Lymington harbour and estuary with much to watch in the way of boating and the coming and going of the Isle of Wight ferries. The balcony protects from the rain, but not completely from the wind. The property was very clean and tidy, is nicely decorated and well-appointed with comfortable furniture and everything we required for a self-catering week. There is no dishwasher, probably due to the compactness of the kitchen area but again, we knew this when we booked. The property was generally very quiet save for the passage of trains at the (near) bottom of the garden. With four each hour (2 trains into, then out of, the ferry terminal station) per hour commencing at six fifteen in the morning and throughout the day until late evening thereafter the squealing of the wheels because of the curve of the line and rumbling of the trains could easily be heard indoors. It was a little intrusive even with the doors and windows closed. But the level of nuisance depends on what you are used to at your own home. The drain in the shower tray clearly needs cleaning and unblocking. The water does drain away – but only very slowly. The shallow shower tray easily fills and could quickly overflow onto the bathroom floor before a decent length (not very long) shower has been completed. A note for the cleaners to this effect was left in the premises so, hopefully, following guests will not be troubled by this. Likewise, the promised bag for our used bedding could not be found, so we improvised by using waste bags. This was also mentioned on the note left for the cleaners. We liked the property so much we have already booked for another visit next year and for us to return somewhere is almost unheard of!

September 2021

There were four of us and we loved the flat. It’s clean, well furnished to a good standard and extremely comfortable. It was our second holiday in 7 Island Point.

July 2021

Spectacular views

June 2021

Very enjoyable stay.

October 2020

Accommodation is compact and the trains were a little annoying but it was a great base to explore the New Forest

September 2020

We were overwhelmed but the beautiful property. So well furnished, maintained and equipped. It was reasonably priced and after many years of self catering holidays it was definitely the best

September 2020

The apartment was perfect. Yes it is 'bijoux', but so thoughtfully planned and furnished it felt quite spacious. It was spotlessly clean, very well equipped, comfortable and quiet, apart from the trains and they didn't bother us at all. In fact they made the already great view more interesting. I could go on, but perhaps to say that we definitely intend to return says it all. Please pass on our thanks to the owners. Elaine Banks.

September 2019

Excellent location, well equipped, comfortable, reasonably priced.

June 2019

Excellent location within a 10 mins walk to Lymington town centre, Trains went passed on a 30 mins basis, but quickly got use to this, other than one morning when a train went passed just after 2am! The view from the living room was lovely, and warched the boats more than the TV!!

June 2019

Yes

May 2019

excellent flat, and very much enjoyed our stay

September 2018

Yes we enjoyed our stay, but didnt realise how frequent the trains went past especially early in the morning, had to close bedroom windows but could still be heard a little. Maybe a warning about some train noise should be included in description.

September 2018

Great location just out of the town so quiet but walking distance to shops pubs and restaurants. Balcony overlooks the marina and views across to Isle of Wight. Only 5 mins walk to ferry and train station. Would come to this property again.

August 2018

Very much enjoyed our stay. An exceptional flat in an exceptional location. Will hopefully be back.

July 2018

yes as always

July 2018

Super location and equipped with everything you could need. Wine on arrival is a nice welcoming gesture.

June 2018

As usual your properties are top marks.

August 2017

Very nice and very clean apartment. Shame about the weather.

July 2017

Very enjoyable stay, great location, enojoyed the bustle of the marina/harbour.

July 2017

Great location and surrounding area . Plenty to Do . Wouldn't be wild about staying at Island Point again

July 2017

The apartment is lovely and the views are excellent, but as stated above the access road is very poor .

April 2017

Lovely property, great outlook would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet, relaxing break.

July 2016

Lovely location. It's great to wake up to the view of yachts and boats across the marina. Out of the way and quiet, but an easy walk into Lymington. We've loved both our stays here.

July 2015

Best holiday let we have ever been to! Balcony views very special. First time to New Forest and thought it was amazing

July 2015

Very comfortable and well-equipped. Loved the view of the harbour!

July 2015

Thank you for lending us your gorgeous view! Lovely flat. Had a lovely time. Such a lovely place.

July 2015

Lovely clean flat! Lovely view! Thank you

May 2015

Just thrilled to bits with our choice of property. Definitely one of the best self catering properties we have stayed in over the years of holidaying.

May 2015

Very good and well equipped accommodation. We were able to enjoy the balcony with a glass of wine, thank you, to watch the boats and ferries.

May 2015

Fantastic position of flat, easy walk into Lymington have made this a good week. Thanks for wine drunk on balcony.
