Home to a flourishing high street lined with a good selection of shops, including a well-stocked convenience store, butchers, deli, chemist and post office, you can pick up all of your essential holiday provisions in Sway. Supermarkets and high street shops can be found in nearby New Milton and Lymington, both just a quick dash in the car.

You don’t have to travel far from your holiday cottage in Sway for a delicious meal as the village is home to two popular pubs and a restaurant. The Silver Hind consistently wins rave reviews for its tasty, locally sourced menu, and welcomes the whole family – including dogs and horses! For traditional pub grub and daily specials, head to The Hare and Hounds, a 200 year old coaching inn with a spacious beer garden and great children’s play area.

For a small village, there’s lots to see and do in Sway. Get active with a game of tennis, football or cricket at the Jubilee Sports Ground, or discover the New Forest on horseback at nearby Ford Farm Stables. For a culture hit, visit ArtSway, a gallery and arts centre hosting local and international exhibitions and a range of workshops. Surrounded by ancient woodland and rolling countryside crisscrossed with tracks and trails, Sway is a haven for walkers and cyclists, so don’t forget to pack your trainers. Sway also has an action-packed events calendar, the highlight being the annual Sway Carnival when crowds of people gather along the bunting clad streets to watch the flamboyant carnival procession pass.

This vibrant little village is best known for the Sway Tower, a 200ft tall Grade II listed tower that can be seen from much of the New Forest. Built by a wealthy local landowner, the looming tower is thought to be the world’s tallest unreinforced concrete structure.

Sway has its own train station and is on the main London Waterloo to Weymouth line, with regular trains to the popular seaside resorts of Bournemouth and Southampton.

Visited for a family meal. We asked to move to a quiet table as part of the restaurant was close to the bar area and noisy. Excellent home cooked food, brilliant service and good value for money.

November 2023

Lovely friendly pub. There were six of us who went for a Sunday Roast. Really delicious food and the puddings were amazing too. Would recommend this pub without hesitation. Service was excellent and staff friendly and attentive.

March 2022

We only popped in once - We fancied a cocktail as it was really hot and thought it would be fun to have something different, Mine came out warm with no ice and was tiny. We couldn't sit on tables outside unless booked but the entire time we sat indoors with no air-con, table were free outside.

A spacious 200-year-old coaching Inn with crackling open fire during the cooler months and spacious beer garden in the warmer weather. This is a family run pub with friendly staff serving a selection of cask ales, beers and decent wine list. The main menu is familiar pub fare, but diners will love the specials board echoing what’s local and in season. Check out their event nights. Dogs are welcome.

We found this to be the best pub around for service and food. As soon as we arrived we were quickly seen to and escorted to a table although we hadn’t booked and it was extremely busy. The person who served us was very professional, attentive, efficient and friendly. The meal itself was first class. We had the fishcakes and these were extremely tasty and well presented. We rated this the best pub for food around the area.

August 2023

Very welcoming when we walked in. The service and the food were both exceptional. Would highly recommend.

Staff were very friendly and the food was excellent - the liver and bacon tower was especially good. There was also a good selection of desserts - the homemade cheesecakes were really nice!

We had a wonderful meal here on 1st June 2023, there is a large varied menu and it was nice not to have chocolate on most of the dessert menu. Patricia.

An excellent country pub not five minutes from where we stayed. Good food and beer.

December 2020

August 2019

Excellent Inn for meals especially their Sunday Lunches - especially try their syrup sponge pudding!

July 2019

Fantastic! Traditional New Forest pub that's always busy and always friendly and welcoming. Sunday lunches are amazing and such good value. Usually lots of vegetarian choices too. Also dog-friendly in the main part of the pub though not the restaurant, but the food is the same. Been visiting regularly on holiday for about 20 years and never fails to please!

March 2018

Sunday lunch was fantastic, now we know why people were waiting outside for it to open!

November 2017

October 2017

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch at Hare and Hounds, could not recommend it more highly, staff very welcoming and very cosy furnishings..

September 2017

Had dinner here on the Friday evening, having pre-booked a table. Menu was appealing and extensive and the quality of the food generally excellent I for both quality (although the steak selected by one of us was reported to be 'gristly' and quantity. Service was efficient on what was clearly a busy evening for them.

The Filly Inn
(2 miles)

(17)

Step in to this 17th century inn and you’ll find a warm welcome. Low ceilings, chunky beams and crooked posts and log burners create a homely olde worlde ambience. Outside is a large and spacious beer garden with glorious views over the forest and Roydon woods nature reserve. Food at The Filly has a fine reputation for its generous portions and fresh local produce, showcasing all the New Forest has to offer. Dogs welcome

Brilliant place and great food, staff great too, great potential as it hasn’t been open too long

July 2023

Visited twice during our stay, luckily the weather was so nice we were able to sit outside in the extensive and attractive outdoor seating area which appeared to welcome dogs and their owners. Varied and interesting menu, food well cooked and tasty. Good service.

June 2023

Busy pub and restaurant. Nice atmosphere and good food. Service on a Saturday evening was a little slow, but overall pretty good.

May 2023

A bit of a disappointment here, a very warm welcoming atmosphere but the food was not good value for money and we did not realise that they allowed dogs in the bar/restuarant area until we had been served our meal. We did not go again.

October 2022

Very nice interior and outside seating area, front of house staff very pleasant but kitchen may have been short staffed. Pub was busy from early on with diners and there seemed to be long waits for courses, at one point the chap who appeared to be in charge went into the kitchen to assist (you can see the open kitchen). I has chicken schnitzel which was massive and a very thick chicken breast with fries and green salad which was just iceberg lettuce with Caesar dressing. Tasted good but expected more than lettuce on the side. OH had burger which was very good apparently. No room for dessert.

September 2022

Beautiful pub, good beer. Didn't eat but have been told the food is brilliant.

March 2022

Had 2 really lovely meals here lively setting and cheerful staff

July 2021

The Filly Inn is a superb place for a meal, friendly staff, and an amazing outside area to sit in the evening sun with your dinner and a drink.

July 2021

We visited the Filly Inn in September 2019 and spent many a late afternoon in the beer garden. We were disappointed in both January and July 2020 to find it under refurbishment :-(. Hoping it will have reopened again for our next visit.

Barton on Sea
(5 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(6 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

August 2021

March 2024

Excellent facilities, even had a room temperature monitor for the baby. Thanks!

October 2023

Yes, a very pleasant stay. A comfortable and well equipped cottage in a lovely quiet location, conveniently situated for Forest walks. Well insulated, too - heating not needed at all during October visit. Extra marks for good lighting in the sitting room.

October 2023

Indeed another lovely holiday at this property.

June 2023

Perfect location for visiting The New Forest. Recommend Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum, Buckler’s Hard and Motor Museum at Beaulieu.

November 2022

Our fourth or fifth visit to this property. A great location for exploring the New Forest. Forest only 10 minutes walk away. Nice and quiet. The only annoying thing is that the heating insists on resetting to 21C every day, we had to keep turning it down as it was too hot.

September 2022

Our 3rd time and location trumps anything else but to be honest the cottage is very good and priced accurately.

September 2022

Cosy, quiet, clean and well equiped. Efficient home care team. Would reccomend and certainly use again

August 2022

It was wonderful. We all enjoyed it very much and will book again for next year.

August 2019

Apart from the cleaning issues above the property was great. It is one of the best equipped we have stayed in and was warm and comfortable. It is also well located for touring the forest and visiting tourist attractions.

August 2019

Yes went to the seafood festival brilliant. Went to the museum at Lymington well worth a visit very informative

August 2019

It was ideal for our family (2 adults, 2 children) and the kitchen was exceptionally well equipped

June 2019

Having stayed here several times before, it remains a good property in a very good location for walking in the forest.

November 2018

The house was very comfortable and well equipped. We only had one person staying in the twin room - it would be fine for two children but probably a bit of a squeeze for two adults.

August 2018

We had a fantastic stay. Easily one of the best equipped holiday homes we have stayed in. The location was perfect for us- very close to the forest for cycling from "home", ideally situated for a day trip to the Isle of Wight, and within easy reach of far more day trips than we could possibly fit into a week. Very comfortable and relaxing stay.

August 2018

Great little house, a good stay here for 4 adults and toddler. 2nd bedroom pretty small with 2 single beds but perfectly comfortable.

March 2018

We had to juggle our travel arrangements due to heavy snow falls and the very cold weather. The letting agents where proactive in contacting us and helping get everything on track.

November 2017

Perfection is hard to find, but we did enjoy our stay.

November 2017

Lovely quiet place, comfortable and warm. Nice décor. Like the situation as we were able to walk straight into the forest - very, very likely to return!

August 2015

Lovely house in a great location. Very quiet location that is in walking of the forest and central to many attractions.

August 2015
