The ancient seaport and historic market town of Lymington was once of greater importance than Portsmouth and played a major part in defending the south coast against the French invasion. The cobbled streets of the old town lead to a High Street where shopping is a real pleasure and you can relax afterwards in one of the traditional tea shops, pubs or restaurants.
The narrow streets are lined with pretty period cottages and houses. There are some great walks along the tidal salt marshes, which are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and make up ten miles of nature reserve. Lymington was and still is a busy fishing port with the Quay providing a scenic viewing point for the constant arrival and departure of boats – from the smallest dinghy to luxury yachts. Just out of town is the car ferry to the Isle of Wight.
