On the western banks of the Lymington River, having wended its way through the sun-dappled glades of the New Forest to find the Solent, lies the beautiful Georgian market town of Lymington.
Lymington has been an illustrious seaport for centuries and was once well-known for its shipbuilding and salt harvesting enterprises. Today, its three sparkling marinas offer berths to the many residents and visiting yachts seen docked in its harbour, tell-tale signs of the town’s vibrant sailing community. In fact, it was the gleaming Solent waters that were the training ground for local hero and five-time Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie; a letter box painted gold in celebration of his achievements can be found at the bottom of the town’s bustling high street.
Lymington’s ancient origins can be traced back to the dyke and mounds that once formed the outer defences of its Iron Age fort, known locally as Buckland Rings. When the Jutes prevailed from the Isle of Wight in the 6th century they founded a settlement called Limentun, and by the time of the Norman conquests this once sparsely populated enclave had grown into a flourishing port.
Today, the characterful, cobbled streets of Lymington are lined with artisan shops, galleries and boutiques, whilst the town’s weekly market is filled with stalls selling everything from garden plants to home-baked cakes. Lymington also plays host to a fleet of elegant restaurants, cosy tea rooms, charming cafés and stylish bistros. Lanes of Lymington, with its sleek balconies and intimate alcoves, has all the pizazz of a top London outlet, while the award-winning Elderflower on Quay Street boasts one of the finest a la carte menus in the region.
Holidays in Lymington can be easily filled with a variety of family-friendly activities, from sunset cruises and stand up paddle boarding to harbourside strolls and coastal rambles. During the sunnier months, the town hosts a number of gala events including the ever-popular Lymington Seafood Festival, a lively July carnival, regattas and regular sailing jamborees. Listen to some summer jazz in the bandstand gardens before a dip in the town’s historic sea water baths, renowned for its rejuvenating mud minerals, and if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a short walk to the marshes and lagoons of Keyhaven Nature Reserve is a must.
Lymington has its own railway station with mainline links from London Waterloo to nearby Brockenhurst. There are also regular bus services with links to the coastal resort of Bournemouth and the maritime city of Southampton, plus, you’ll also be able to pick up the New Forest tour bus and enjoy an open-top safari. If you’ve had your fill of landlubbing, a quick channel hop on the car and passenger ferry to the Isle of Wight might be just the ticket.

An atmospheric, former coaching inn dating back to the 17th century in the centre of Lymington with a pleasant beer garden. July 2021
A decent pub serving decent food at a decent price. I very much enjoyed the meal, shame about the flat beer.
July 2021
Nice pub in the centre of Lymington, food was lovely, shame there wasn't any cask ales - we visited this pub for lunch on the basis of the Good Pub Guide.
May 2021
Good food and service
September 2020
Friendly staff, good food, comfortable surroundings
August 2020
Very disappointing. So much so that I submitted a complaint to customer service via email and the response was very unsatisfactory too! My advice would be to avoid.
November 2019
Visited this pub whilst on holiday. My wife and I had the intention of eating there, although we had not booked. We ordered 2 drinks (beer) which I could not drink at all. I took them back to the bar with the intention of asking them to be replaced. I waited for 15 minutes. During this time the 2 bar staff who were on duty walked past several times whilst serving other customers. Neither showed any interest in finding out what my problem was or that they knew I was there. In the end I left the beer on the bar and walked out. I have visited Lymington several times in the past and hope to holiday there again in the future, but I will never go into this place again.
May 2019
Very disappointing and long delay in seating us on arrival despite having a reservation.
January 2018
We loved this pub! We went with the kids for a quick drink around lunchtime and then came back in the evening without the kids. Great atmosphere, well furnished, and great drinks on offer. The menu looked fantastic too, however, we didn't get to sample it! We'll definitely go again if we return to Lymington.
July 2017
Perfect for lunch. They have a £6 lunchtime menu which offers excellent value for money. I had the wild mushroom linguine. Delicious and good sized portion. My husband had the burger which comes with fries and homemade ketchup. Staff are friendly and chatty too which is nice.

October 2023
Brilliant Museum and the cafe is excellent
September 2023
Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.
September 2023
Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.
August 2022
A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries
May 2022
Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!
October 2021
Well worth spending a morning learning about the history of Lymington and the wider New Forest area. There is always an interesting pop up exhibition too. The cafe is great and serves lovely home made food.

Lovely trip out on the boat. We had the boat to ourselves and my children both had a turn at driving which they were really pleased about. I wish they did trips that were a little longer than half an hour.

Milford on Sea
(4 miles)
(16)
A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. The superb Raft Rocks Restaurant is worth a visit with its Art deco style and roof terrace. You can also walk across the wildlife marshes to Keyhaven harbour and (in season) take the boat to Hurst Castle or the Isle of Wight.
Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.
March 2024
A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.
August 2023
Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.
June 2023
Brilliant beach.
September 2022
Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away
July 2022
A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.
October 2021
One of my favourite places
July 2021
Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.
September 2020
Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.
September 2019
Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.
June 2019
Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s
April 2019
great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach
March 2019
Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.
December 2017
Fantastic sea location with goods pubs, shops etc
November 2017
Lovely village, plenty of shops and places to eat - no post office though.
June 2017
Barton on Sea
(6 miles)
(2)
A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.
A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.
June 2023
Super walk, nice and easy and great place for a meal or tea and cake by the car park.
April 2019
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)
Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.
To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.
Highcliffe Castle Beach
(7 miles)
(3)
A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.
Very picturesque beach with great access, looks good for a beach day
October 2021

April 2017
Avon Beach
(9 miles)
(2)
A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all. For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months. This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.
Nice beach with good facilities
April 2023
Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!
August 2021
April 2024
Overall yes we did.
September 2023
Great stay, weather not great but after a days walking a good house to come back to. Would recommend.
August 2023
We loved staying at Greyholm, a good size house for two grandparents, two grandchildren and their uncle (our son), with a pleasant kitchen diner, two bathrooms and a downstairs loo. Liked the little conservatory too. And good to have parking! It was a little far from the harbour to just pop out in the evenings, but otherwise highly recommended
July 2023
Had a very enjoyable stay
April 2023
We enjoyed our stay very much - thanks!
September 2022
Very enjoyable the only complaint, not really a complaint was the mattress on the double bed was a little uncomfortable after staying 2 weeks. However the offer to change the sheets after 1st week was very thoughtful. Thankyou.
September 2022
Yes. This was a lovely property and very well located. Really high standard and well equipped. A very quiet road. Sufficient parking for two cars was a real bonus. We would love to come back in the future.

Had a very nice stay at Grayholme. Everything was as described.

September 2019
Yes. Excellent location and a well appointed modern property
August 2019
Had a great stay again in Grayholme and a lovely week in Lymington (reported in Visitor book). A Welcome Pack including a small carton of milk would have saved a very early trip to Waitrose and helped with a much needed cup of tea on arrival. However, my parents staying in Cobblers Cottage were provided with this little bonus.
June 2019
Yes a lovely home from home which had just the right touches to make it extra comfortable. We were a large group of 6 plus a baby but it never felt crowded.
October 2018
We loved our stay. The house is well located and very practical. Plenty of space for six of us. Lovely standard of decor throughout. Very pleased with it. Thank you!
October 2018
Great place to stay, shower fixed very quickly, would recommend a trip to Isle of Wight, Yarmouth very quaint, Gossips great place for lunch and a visit to the Needles. Also great walk around salt pans, great birding area.
September 2018
LOVELY HOUSE VERY CLEAN GOOD LOCATION
June 2018
Loved it.
April 2018
There were four of us over the weekend and two for the remainder of the week, we did all enjoy our stay
August 2017
We did enjoy our stay in the house. It has an excellent location, very quiet with plenty of parking space. Everything was very comfortable and the white goods in the house were excellent. It was very nice to have a conservatory. The property would benefit from a few personal touches, hard to explain, but it felt very much like a rent-for-profit house; for instance there was no welcome pack of tea and biscuits! I feel the above comments might seem to be 'nit picking', but it was not what we have come to expect, given the rental price of the property.
August 2017
We love Lymington and the New Forest. We have enjoyed many summer holidays here and this is our second week long stay at Grayholme. Our previous week here was in 2012.
August 2017
Despite above comments (and the weather) my family and I enjoyed our holiday very much. The house was quiet, convenient for the town and countryside and pleasant. Its situation was just what we wanted.
July 2017
Really enjoyed our stay. Nearly did not book this house because on the map it looked near a main road but it was a really quiet location. Had a great time walking around the New Forest and going over to the Isle of Wight. Lots of things we did not get time to do and would happily come back to the area. New Forest cottages service was excellent and efficient.
July 2017
Abs lovely stay! The house is in a great location and really is a home from home! We had a wonderful week!
July 2017
We had a wonderful stay at Grayholme. Everything was great. The house was perfect. It was peaceful, comfortable and clean as well as being in a quiet location even though it was close to all of Lymington's amenities. Thank you for everything.
June 2017
It's often difficult to find accommodation with single rooms or sufficient twin bed rooms. Grayholme suited our group perfectly.
May 2017
When booking in October 2016, the office staff were very helpful, as we visited the Lymington office whilst on a stay in Brockenhurst. The house was located in a quiet Close with very good car space and parking for our two motorcycles as well. Well equipped and comfortably furnished. An excellent base to explore the New Forest and attractions. Good information in the file with up to date tourist information provided. We had a great time and will book with new Forest Cottages again.
September 2016
Well equipped, clean and modern house in a good location for coast, town and forest.

July 2022
Had a very nice stay at Grayholme. Everything was as described.
May 2022
The kitchen was very well equipped with lots of china etc of high quality that could all go in the dishwasher - perfect ! Appreciated the conservatory and the secluded garden, ideal to relax in. A very quiet location.
April 2022
We had a wonderful stay. The location of the property was perfect for our family. We can recommend the Elderflower, The Pig and the Filly Inn.

July 2021
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Grayholme. The house was so warming and friendly it felt as if we had been there for years. Excellent location for the New Forest and for Lymington. Would very much return in the future.

Our stay was just fine!
September 2020
We had a lovely week away thank you, a much needed and appreciated break after working for 6 months solid in healthcare. Thank you.

June 2018
Loved it.

An atmospheric, former coaching inn dating back to the 17th century in the centre of Lymington with a pleasant beer garden. A regular stop for locals to have a drink, the Kings Arms serves good, honest pub food from a friendly crew of staff. The pub maybe historic, yet entertainment is very much twenty first century, with a regular and varied selection of live music, DJ, quiz nights and TV sports events.

Great steak and good service

June 2023
