Portsmouth Historic Dockyards, Portsmouth

Portsmouth Historic Dockyards offers a truly memorable family day out. Your under 10s will love exploring the historic ships HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the First World War’s Gallipoli Campaign HMS M.33. Head to the other side of the harbour on a free shuttle boat and explore a HMS Alliance, a real Cold War era submarine. No trip to the Dockyard is complete without a visit to Action Stations where your little ones will be able to train like Royal Marine Commandos. During the school holidays you’ll find an exciting programme of events and activities perfect for under 10s to enjoys!

Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum, Farnborough

Discover the fascinating history of the birthplace of British powered flight and military aviation. This interesting museum is located near Farnborough Airport, which means you can often see and hear jets regularly taking off and landing. The museum offers a number of children’s activities including colouring and crafts, toy aircraft and quizzes. Children can also have a go in the museum’s working spitfire cockpit simulator. Open every weekend and Bank Holiday Mondays 10am-4pm.

Hurst Castle, New Forest National Park

Situated on the coast of the Solent at the very end of Hurst Spit, this Tudor Castle is a fantastic place for your under 10s to discover. The open space means they can run free and to explore the castle and grounds. Climb to the top of the Tudor castle’s roof and look out over the Solent, adventure into the Tudor keep basement and travel through time learning about the living conditions of a First and Second World War Soldier. During the school holidays Hurst Castle offers a range of events specifically for children.

Solent Sky, Southampton

This hidden gem of a museum is located in the vibrant city of Southampton and is a must visit for all aviation enthusiasts. The museum tells the stories of Hampshire’s aviation history and offers the chance to get up close and personal with a real Spitfire. Your little ones can enjoy colouring sheets to and aviation quizzes with prizes to be won. Children can also access cockpits and flight decks of historic planes to get a sense of how the pilots would have felt flying these amazing machines. Check opening days and times before your visit, tickets can be purchased in the door.

Museum of Army Flying, Andover

The Museum of Army Flying tells the 100 year story of the British Army in the air. Explore the museum whilst taking part in a number of fun child friendly quizzes. Your little ones will love the airfield themed outdoor play area and the popular ball pit. Plus they can have a go on the interactive Scout helicopter.  Make sure you stop off at the Apache Café and enjoy its views across the airfield. A schedule of aircraft movement can be found on the museum’s website. The museum offers a number of exciting events and activities taking place during the school holidays.

Royal Army Physical Training Corps Museum, Aldershot

Discover the amazing story of the Officers and Instructors who have trained the British Army. Located inside the Army School of Physical Training this museum is home to historic uniform, training equipment and much more. For children under 10 quizzes and trails are available for them to use as they explore the museum, plus children can dress up like a real life solder.

Basing House, Basingtoke

Basing House is home to battle scarred historical ruins of the largest private house in Tudor England once visited by Henry VII and Elizabeth I. Today this family attraction offers a fantastic day out. A new ‘Basing Mouse’ trail is available for children and they dress up like a Tudor and have their photo taken in a Tudor photo frame.  The recreated Jacobean Garden offers a perfect picnic spot and throughout the year Basing House holds a number of family friendly events including open air theatre and re-enactments.
