Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series returns to Portsmouth
From 21 – 24 July 2016 the best sailors in the world will head to Portsmouth and will compete in the second Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth event.
The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is the equivalent F1 on water, with 45 foot catamarans flying (known as foiling) above the water up to 50 mph racing against one and other.
The America’s Cup World Series is a succession 5 qualifying events held across the globe, with all the teams aiming to get to the final in Bermuda for 35th America’s Cup in 2017.
Britain’s four time Olympic gold medallist sailor Sir Ben Ainslie will be looking to lead his team Land Rover BAR to victory again in Portsmouth after his team won in 2015.
Last years event attracted over 240,000 people across the weekend. This year’s event is set to be even better! Spectators will be able to watch the racing in three areas ; free to view ticketless area on Southsea Common, however the best places to watch the action will be in the Race Village or on the water.
In the Race village
The Race Village will be where it’s all happening. You’ll be able to see the best of the racing, get up close to the teams and their boats with the Sailor dock in and-out shows, plus don’t miss the signing sessions. There will be daily air displays from Red Arrows (Friday), The Blades (Saturday) and Red Bull Matadors (Sunday).
Whilst the racing is not happening there’s still plenty to do;
- The main stage will host Aprés Sail entertainment with live music
- Interactive exhibits
- Visit the Tech Zone to see the latest technology used on the America’s Cup boats
- Travis Perkin Skate Park, with Red Bull professional skaters carrying out displays throughout the weekend
- Shop till you drop at the Marketplace where you will be able to buy local produce, official merchandise and sailing clothing and equipment
- Fantastic food stalls so you can eat to your hearts content
Top Tip – Portsmouth will be buzzing with excitement which will mean there will be a lot more traffic. The quickest and easiest way to get to the event will be by train arriving at Portsmouth Harbour, it’s approximately a 20 minute walk from there to the race village.
Watch the action on the water
If you want to feel like you are part of the action, then Sunsail (Official Charter Partner) have created fantastic packages for sailing or powerboats, on-board you will have breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, you will have time for some sailing or cruising in the morning and watch the racing on water at the edge of the racing area.
