An exhibition by contemporary artists celebrating the literature of three Hampshire writers - Jane Austen, Gilbert White and Edward Thomas, in particular marking 200 years since Jane died and 100 years since Edward Thomas died, on 9 April.

Gilbert White and The Oates Collections, Selborne GU34 3JH
Gilbert White and the Oates Collections are commemorating the writings of Gilbert White with an exhibition of lettering and sculptures based on The Natural History of Selborne and Gilbert White’s poems and letters. They are on show in Gilbert’s restored 18th century Garden at Gilbert White’s House in Selborne in the landscape that he loved, substantially unchanged since his day.

Petersfield Museum, GU32 3HU
This year, Petersfield Museum marks the centenary of the death of Edward Thomas, a poet who took much inspiration from the natural beauty of the South Downs countryside, especially around his home in Steep. His later poems relate to his experiences after enlisting and he died during the First World War on 9 April 1917 at the battle of Arras. Our featured artists have taken inspiration from Thomas’ work, his life and the landscape about which he wrote.

Petersfield Physic Garden GU32 3JJ
Petersfield Physic Garden is a private garden, created in a 17th Century style, which is open to the public without charge, providing a green oasis in the centre of the town. There is a topiary walk, a knot garden, an informal orchard with wild flowers and a rose arch, which provide the perfect setting for the artists’ works.

Chawton House Library GU34 1SJ
Chawton House Library will be celebrating 2017 as a great year for women writers, commemorating not only Jane Austen, but also highlighting some of her lesser-known contemporaries.
Fickle Fortunes (12 June – 24 September) will explore the waxing and waning of female celebrity, focusing on Jane Austen and Germaine de Staël – including rare first editions and manuscripts, and a letter by Jane Austen, which has never before been exhibited.

Winchester Cathedral SO23 9LS
Winchester Cathedral will be marking the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen with a series of events celebrating the life and work of this much-loved and admired author. The artists showing at the cathedral will be focusing on Jane’s enduring commitment to the Bible through her letters and poetry, as well as exploring some of her famous clerical characters.

The Museum has beautiful gardens in which we have a small exhibition of sculptural works marking 200 years since Jane Austen’s death. Visitors can also enjoy our 18th-century workhouse building with archaeology and local history and art exhibitions.
