About
As part of the Netley Literary Festival at Netley Abbey sees a day literary celebration, with much anticipated book launches from renowned authors and historians.
The event will kick start at Abbey Hall with Medieval Mystery Writer Cassandra Clark, who will be launching the latest of her Hildegard Mysteries detective series, entitled The Alchemist of Netley Abbey, set during the turbulent reign of Richard II.
This will be followed by an illustrated talk from Historian Dr Cheryl Butler, which will accompany the launch of Jane Austen & Southampton Spa, a book commissioned as part of the Jane Austen commemorations.
Following on from that is the launch of Netley Abbey, Jane Austen and the Gothic Imagination, a new Hampshire paper from co-authors Dr Simon Sandell of the University of Winchester and historic buildings expert Dr John Hare.
The day will then finish in style with a performance of Hide, a new play performed by Boiling Point, a theatre company formed from senior members of The Point Youth Theatre.
The play, written by Festival Director and The Berry Theatre Writer-in-Residence Matt Beames, is a re-telling of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 gothic classic, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Also featured throughout the day are: a guided walk around the abbey's grounds, a literary lunch at the Prince Consort pub, pop-up bookshop and a 'Meet the Authors' event.
These events form part of the Netley Literary Festival, which takes place in a number of venues across Netley.
Netley Literary Festival is a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project, and is curated by the Berry Theatre.
