Watersports

For top class sailing, windsurfing and kayaking, look no further than the Solent.

The Hampshire coastline has many attractive harbours, marinas and estuaries, providing ideal locations for watersports.

The River Hamble, with its annual regatta, is one of the country's leading yachting centres and many kinds of leisure craft and sailing facilities can be found there.

Both yacht charter for the experienced sailor or sailing courses for beginners are available at numerous coastal centres in Hampshire.

Visiting boats are welcome in many marinas and a choice of locations is available, from quiet and unspoilt spots such as Emsworth or Keyhaven to attractive town harbours such as Lymington or those with easy access to bars and restaurants such as Port Solent.

Hayling Island's award-winning beaches are the popular home of windsurfing while the Calshot Activity Centre on the edge of the New Forest offers a variety of courses in sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and powerboating for people of all ages and abilities.

For the more adventurous, the Solent also offers opportunities to try out kitesurfing, waterskiing and wakeboarding.

Sailing in Hampshire

Southampton has become synonymous with sailing. If you do not own a boat then places such as Port Solent and Ocean Village provide a perfect setting to sit back on the marina and admire yachts of all shapes and sizes.

If you are looking to start sailing the Hamble School of Yachting run numerous approved courses and taster sessions.

Sailing and Watersports guide for Gosport and Lee-on-the-SolentThe Jubilee Sailing Trust operates two of the only tall sailing ships in the world designed for people with physical disabilities based in Southampton. The Jubilee Sailing Trust is a registered charity and helps change young peoples lives by taking them out and the tall ships and enabling them to do something that may otherwise not have been possible.

Gosport has produced a handy new guide to help sailing and watersports enthusiasts get the most out of a visit to the Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent area. Packed with details on local marinas, boat charter companies, sailing tuition, kite surfing, fishing and chandlers, the guide has all you need to know, including a very useful map showing the public slipways available.
