Cricket

Hampshire is home to the internationally acclaimed Ageas Bowl, formerly known as the Rose Bowl, situated on the outskirts of Southampton in the village of West End. Built in 2001 and costing £24m, the Ageas Bowl is used for county and one day international cricket matches as well as music concerts and seasonal events. It hosted its first Test Match in 2011 between England and Sri Lanka, becoming only the tenth ground in England and Wales to do so.

Hampshire County Cricket Club play the majority of their home games at the Ageas Bowl and are one of the 18 major county clubs which make up the English domestic cricket structure.

It was founded in August 1863 and was based at the County Ground in Northlands Road, Southampton since 1885. Hampshire played its initial first class match against Sussex but lost by ten wickets. The first record of cricket being played was actually in 1622 in a legal case in Boxgrave where two men were accused of playing cricket in the church grounds.

Cricket grounds have a strong affiliation with public houses in the South. Offering a great opportunity to explore some of Hampshire's finest inns and taverns from the Bat and Ball in Hambledon to The Globe on the Lake in Alresford.
