Hampshire’s three cities Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth each reflect the rich history of this great historic county and are perfect for short breaks and day trips.
Winchester is Hampshire’s historic county town and England’s ancient capital. King Arthur’s round table and Jane Austen’s grave in Winchester Cathedral are key highlights. Boutique shopping and fine dining in a historic setting also provide a draw for many.
Southampton is the United Kingdom’s premier maritime trading port. The Titanic set sail from this port in 1912 on its fateful maiden voyage. The city is Europe’s premier cruise port, playing host to Cunard’s cruise liner Queen Mary 2 and P&O, Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises cruise ships. Home to Sea City Museum, the West Quay shopping and leisure destination and thriving arts and cultural scene, this city is going places.
Portsmouth is the traditional home of the Royal Navy and the United Kingdom’s only island city. Warships made this city what is today and here you will find the world famous Mary Rose and HMS Victory historic ships. If designer shopping is what you’re after then head to Gunwharf Quays which mixes retail, leisure and great dining in a superb waterfront location.
