Dr Townshend, one of the team members behind the British Library's recent exhibition on the Gothic, will be giving a talk focusing on the literature, art and tourism at the Hampshire village.
The crux of the talk will be the examination of the 18th Century's love affair with gothic tourism.
Dr Townshend's talk forms part of the Netley Literary Festival commemorating 200 years since the death of Jane Austen.
Netley Literary Festival is a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project, and is curated by the Berry Theatre.
