Former Tudor ‘power house’ The Vyne presents a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in King Henry VIII’s visit to this country estate with Anne Boleyn, in 1535.

Set against an authentic Tudor backdrop, this intimate lecture provides a rare opportunity to hear the latest research into this period in Henry’s life, from one of the country’s leading young scholars in early modern history – Doctor Lucy Kaufman.

A fellow of Keble College, Oxford, Lucy’s talk on 9 June takes you back in time to the turbulent world of this notorious king, as he fights for the position of Supreme Head of the Church, breaking England away from hundreds of years of the Catholic faith. 

Lucy explores the drama and impact of the king’s Royal Progress to The Vyne in October 1535, as he urgently seeks support for his new role, and acceptance of his controversial second wife Anne Boleyn. 

Find out what happens when he arrives at The Vyne – home of powerful Catholic traditionalist, and Henry’s Lord Chamberlain, William Sandys. 

After the lecture, there’ll be plenty of time for questions with this highly respected historian. Visitors can then enjoy The Vyne’s newly presented ground floor showrooms, which include a unique Tudor Mass sound experience in its 16th-century chapel. 

This new visitor experience is part of a wider project to reveal new stories about this magnificent mansion whilst we repair The Vyne’s leaking roof, at a cost of £5.4 million, The lecture is just one of the exciting events in this year’s new programme to raise awareness of our fundraising appeal for the roof.
