SamJam is a one day music festival, which will debut on the 25th August this year in aid of children's music therapy charity scheme, Sam's Song, in association with the Sussex Snowdrop Trust. SamJam is proudly partnered with English Heritage, who have provided the perfect setting, at the stunning Bishop's Waltham Palace ruins.
The charity, Sam's Song, was set up last year the family of Sam Smith, after they lost him to cancer. Sam was just 42 when he died, leaving his family, including his two young daughters of 6 and 9, bereft. Sam was a talented and thoroughly passionate musician who left a big impression on those he met and jammed with. He was extremely modest despite being an inspiring natural talent, who picked up instruments and played them by ear with ease. His instrument was guitar which he loved, and which gave him so much every time he picked one up. It was a comfort, it challenged him, it relaxed him, it made him happy and importantly, it brought people close. A true tonic for his soul, through good times and especially when things got tough.
Sam was also hugely enthusiastic about engaging and inspiring children with music. He saw their huge potential and their immense desire to learn and so taught various children guitar as a hobby. During Sam's various treatments he talked at length with a friend, a leading paediatric oncologist, about using music as a therapy to help children who were ill. In his memory Sam's Song was born - a great cause helping children with life-limiting conditions and helping his friends and family do something positive in their grief, as Sam's legacy.
Sam's Song is now operating through the Sussex Snowdrop Trust at Chichester Hospital providing music therapy for young children during their illness. The Sussex Snowdrop Trust is a registered Charity (no. 1096622).
SamJam is a fundraiser for Sam's Song with music as the connection. Sam was a Glastonbury attendee for many years and regularly played in his garden for the neighbours to enjoy. Given Sam's passion for music of all genres and his constant search for 'new to him' artists, SamJam will be an eclectic mix to celebrate music in its entirety and its uplifting medicinal qualities.
There will be a full programme with a line-up of talented musicians in a range of genres, all of whom have agreed to perform free of charge, as well as other entertainments for both young and old to make it a truly great day for all those attending.
SamJam will be held on Sam's birthday, the 25th August, a Bank Holiday weekend. With the sensational backdrop of the Bishop's Waltham Palace, just minutes from Sam's home and where he spent many happy times, SamJam is the opportunity to organise a fun and memorable day whilst raising money for a truly worthwhile cause.
