With a history dating back over 2,000 years it’s no wonder that Winchester is home to several ghosts including reputedly, the ghost of famous author and Hampshire resident, Jane Austen.

Basing House

Over the October half term, Basingstoke’s Basing House usually holds guided ghost walks. For 2023, these walks are set to take place from 26-31 October. 

Find out more about the wicked history of the site as you're taken on a tour around these historic ruins, there’s many a story to tell. Halloween costumes are strongly encouraged and bringing a torch to light the way is recommended too.

Theatrical ghost tours of Hampshire

For a slightly different type of ghost walk, Supernatural Tours runs award-winning theatrical ghost tours. On these tours, you can expect to meet live actors as you explore the streets of Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester and even the New Forest in the darkness. Supernatural Tours also runs ghost tours of Southampton Tudor House & Garden. 

Likewise, The Theatre of Dark Encounters runs theatrical ghost walks through the streets of Portsmouth, Alton, Southampton and Winchester. The company also has regular “ghost story” events at The King’s Theatre, Southsea, join them to hear stories of ghosts who are claimed to haunt the theatre.
