Big History Weekend at Royal Armouries Fort Nelson

History comes to life this summer as Fort Nelson invites visitors to experience the sights, sounds and stories of the past with its Big History Weekend.

The free event takes place on the weekend of July 4 and 5 and will be a journey through centuries of history, with interactive demonstrations, live re-enactments, and hands-on activities for visitors of all ages.

A Tudor falconry display, Viking and Saxon skirmishes, a Second World War dog search and rescue display and Roman story telling sessions will entertain visitors.

Gun-firing will take place, face painting and a Time Travellers trail for all the family to enjoy.

The event will showcase a vibrant programme celebrating Britain's rich military and social history in the surroundings of the iconic Victorian fort overlooking Portsmouth.

Visitors will also be able to explore the Royal Armouries National Collection of Arms and Armour, which is housed at Fort Nelson.
Tickets must be booked in advance here as the event has capacity limits in place.

Fort Nelson is set in 19 acres and has ramparts, a Parade Ground, tunnels and outdoor spaces to explore. The Fort is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 5pm during term time and daily in the school holidays – admission is free.
