A special evening event held at Hampshire Record Office to celebrate 70 years of the NHS featuring a guest talk by Dr Andrew Oswell, Royal Hampshire County Hospital, entitled 'Plagues, pilgrims, and politics: a history of Royal Hampshire County Hospital.'
From the medieval miasma of Winchester arose a pioneer hospital which was to help lead the way in the creation of a national health service. We shall explore the historical context of health care as we plot the development of hospital medicine, culminating in the creation of a state of the art Victorian facility and its absorption into the National Health Service in 1948.
In this celebratory 70th year of the NHS Hampshire Record Office will also examine the inception and maturation of this world renowned institution and discuss some of the challenges it now faces in the 21st century.
Dr Andrew Oswell MA MB ChB FRCP qualified in the Midlands in 1993 and completed his post graduate education and training in the Wessex region. During his undergraduate training he developed a keen interest in teaching and achieved a Master's in Education at Winchester University. He was appointed as a Consultant Physician and Clinical teacher at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in 2004 and has held the post of Director of Medical Education since 2008.
Throughout his career he has been fascinated by local history and the history of medical practise through the ages. He has always researched the origins of the hospitals he has worked in and was delighted to discover the well documented history of the Royal Hampshire County hospital when he arrived. He has used many historical sources in the preparation of this talk including the established hospital archive.
An exhibition of original archival material will be on display, including fascinating letters by Florence Nightingale, records from hospitals from around Hampshire, including Knowle and Royal Hampshire County, and recipes for home remedies for various ailments, including smallpox. Furthermore, archival film footage from Wessex film and Sound Archive will be played.
