Hampshire's garden centres are worth visiting in their own right, whether you're after a car boot full of plants, a long lunch somewhere lovely, or a proper specialist find you won't come across anywhere else. From grand destination centres with restaurants and gift shops to tiny growers tucked down country lanes, the county has a remarkable range. Here's a tour of the best, region by region.
Garden Centres in Southampton and the Surrounding Area
Brambridge Park Garden Centre at Colden Common is a firm local favourite, with a great plant range, friendly staff and a lovely cafe. It comes with a couple of genuine surprises too: resident goats on site, and the Bankside Miniature Railway running behind the car park, the only 8¼ inch miniature railway in the UK open to the public at weekends and bank holidays. A lovely bonus for families.
Haskins Garden Centre at West End is one of the larger options in the Southampton area, with a big restaurant, a Hobbycraft concession on site and a function room available for private hire. In-Excess at Fair Oak takes a broad approach, covering not just plants and gardening but pets, hardware, décor and car essentials under one roof.
For something with genuine heart, Mayfield Garden Centre in Weston is a not-for-profit centre where every penny made goes back into supporting Solent Mind. Alongside a solid plant range, you'll find a fresh fruit and vegetable shop, a florist and a dog grooming salon. Good for the garden, good for the community.
The Garden Society in West End is worth seeking out for its beautiful Orangery Tea House Restaurant, popular afternoon teas and private event space, all in a dog-friendly setting.
Garden Centres in Romsey and Mid-Hampshire

Gilberts in Romsey has earned a loyal following for its spectacular dahlia displays in August and September, free to walk around and genuinely worth making a trip for. There's a lovely cafe on site too, though note it's closed on Mondays. Just down the road, Plantaholics is a small independent nursery selling houseplants, pots and herbaceous plants, with the thoughtful touch of pet-safe labelling throughout. A proper enthusiast's find.
Hillier Garden Centre at Braishfield is part of the historic Hampshire nursery brand with a strong home and giftware range alongside quality plants and gardening advice.
Further along into mid-Hampshire, Long Barn at Alresford is a grower and distiller of lavender with a barn-style gift shop and cafe, and Garthowen Garden Centre at Four Marks is a charming independent with a treehouse coffee shop that makes it a lovely destination in its own right.
Garden Centres in the New Forest
The New Forest has a particularly good cluster of garden centres, many of them independents with real character.
Fairweather's Garden Centre in Beaulieu is a beautiful independent in the heart of the National Park, while Everton Nurseries near Lymington is bigger than it first appears, with a huge pot selection, garden furniture, farm shop and restaurant.
Setley Ridge at Brockenhurst is a quaint, family-run centre with 30 years of history, a tearoom and a farm shop right next door, ideal for a stop-off during a day exploring the forest.
Shallowmead at Boldre combines outdoor plants and homewares with an artisan makers' zone, premium farm shop, café and a dedicated workshops room, one of the more distinctive garden centre experiences in the county.
For specialists, Mac Pennys Nursery near Bransgore is genuinely unique: a family-run nursery offering choice and rare plants, with the chance to see them growing in their natural environments along the Woodland Walks.
Bashley Plant Centre at New Milton has been established since 1965 and grows a significant proportion of its own stock across a 4-acre site, with a particularly impressive tree selection at reasonable prices.

Do also keep the early May bank holiday weekend penciled in for the annual BBC Gardeners' World Spring Fair, held in the grounds of Beaulieu.
Garden Centres in Fareham, Winchester and East Hampshire
Garsons at Titchfield is a large, well-established centre with a farm shop, restaurant and retail offering. Stewarts Abbey Garden Centre, also in Titchfield, is a popular destination for aquatics, with an impressive selection of live fish and aquatic products alongside its main plant range.
Mud Island Garden Centre near Wickham is a family-run independent with over 30 years of experience, growing their own plants at their own nurseries.
In the Winchester area, George Beckett Nurseries at Compton has been a family business since 1976, growing trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals for gardeners and landscapers.
Hillier Garden Centre Winchester offers the brand's trusted quality in a solid local setting.
For East Hampshire, Rake Garden Centre near Petersfield is a Blue Diamond centre with a good range and table-service café, while Aylings Garden Centre is a family-run alternative with a tearoom, pet section and local produce.
Redfields Garden Centre at Fleet is one of the larger Blue Diamond centres in the county, with an extensive plant range and two restaurants on site.
Garden Centres in North Hampshire and Basingstoke
Longstock Park Nursery near Stockbridge is part of the Waitrose and Partners Farm family, with a clematis archway and buddleja collection visitors can explore during opening hours, plus a farm shop and café.
The Plant Centre at Hortus Loci at Hound Green near Hook is a specialist independent with a lovely cafe in a shed, the kind of place that rewards a detour.
Vigo Nursery in Andover has been a family-run nursery and florist since 1954, with a particular strength in plants and hanging baskets. There's also an on-site florist.
Garden Centres in the Portsmouth Area
Stansted Park Garden Centre at Rowlands Castle sits within the beautiful Stansted Park Estate, with woodland grounds, tea rooms and a play area for children, making it a genuinely pleasant family outing as well as a gardening destination.
Keydell Nurseries at Horndean is a well-stocked local option with a charming duck pond on site, and Havant Garden Centre is part of the British Garden Centres group with aquatics, soft play and a restaurant.
