About
On 15 May 1999, during Museums week, Petersfield Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time. The first exhibits included a Victorian penny farthing, the town charter and Minibrix. The museum will be showing some of these early acquisitions during a special week-long exhibition celebrating twenty years of Petersfield Museum.
Three years prior to opening, the Petersfield Museum Trust held an exhibition in the Festival Hall, to promote the idea of having a Museum in the town. At this exhibition, local community groups and individuals brought along objects and stories to boost the collection of exhibits for the new Museum. Over twenty years later, they are inviting you to do the same. Whether you have an artefact you would like to donate, a photograph for them to scan or an oral history you'd like them to record, volunteers will be on hand to help during the exhibition. Any item that may enhance the collections will be gratefully received.
During this week, the museum will also be displaying a selection of Don Eades' photographs of Petersfield for the very first time. Don Eades was photographer for the Petersfield Post during the late twentieth century and the insight they provide into life in the town at that time is incomparable. Petersfield Museum are very excited to be able to share these images and would appreciate help in identifying people and places captured in the photographs on display.
You're also invited to celebrate with them at their birthday party on 15th May. Hear the museum's story so far, and all about the exciting plans for the future, over a drink and a slice of cake. And afterwards enjoy the party games!
