About
Jane Austen's House Museum are holding a special birthday party to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Museum and everyone is invited!
The Museum grounds will be decorated and filled with festivity, with activities for all the family on offer throughout the day. There will be lots to see and do including live music performed by one of Britain’s leading violinists Sophie Langdon, Regency garden games to play, and a chance to dress up and pose with their special anniversary selfie-frame. Alongside this, The Duke of Wellington’s Dancers will be performing Regency dances and visitors will even have the chance to join in!
If you find all that dancing makes you hungry, why not enjoy a picnic in the enchanting surroundings of Jane’s cottage garden? Either bring your own or purchase a special picnic pack from the museum's friends at Cassandra’s Cup tea room (opposite the Museum). Quench your thirst with a glass of ‘Jane’s Party Pimm’s’, on sale by The Greyfriar Pub from a pop up stall in the Museum garden and if you’re in need of a sweet treat, Cassandra’s Cup will also be selling cakes and scones from the garden.
Head into the House to view the dedicated anniversary exhibition, Making the Museum, and drop into hourly Curator’s Questions sessions to find out more about treasured Jane Austen objects and how the collection has been built over the last 70 years.
To top it off, all visitors will be issued with a special commemorative ticket, based on the original invitation to the opening of the House in 1949. Present this ticket in The Greyfriar to receive 5% off food on the day.
Regency dress is actively encouraged!
Please note: annual ticket will not be valid on this special event day.
Generously supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund. In 2019, as well as celebrating the Museum’s 70th birthday, Jane Austen's House Museum are marking the successful completion of the Heritage Fund Collecting Cultures project. During the five-year project we have acquired several treasures for the permanent collection, run a programme of exhibitions and events, re-decorated rooms in the house, hosted two curatorial traineeships and extended our volunteering opportunities.
