Join John Stanley, author of The Exbury Junkers: a World War II Mystery, on a guided walk through Exbury Gardens. John will retell the curious tale of the solitary Junkers Ju188 aircraft that flew into the heart of the allied invasion preparations on the Solent just weeks before D-Day and was shot down, crashing at Exbury.
Hear about the wartime role of Exbury House, see where the plane crashed and killed the seven young German airmen on board and find out why novelist Nevil Shute become so intrigued by this lone German bomber and its unknown mission.
Timings Tours will start at 11am and 2pm, lasting approximately 90 minutes.
Please meet at the Visitor Entrance, approximately 10 minutes before your preferred tour is due to depart.
Tickets £5 per person for Friends of Exbury members. £14.50 per person for non-members - includes entry to the gardens for a full day. Pre-booking is encouraged, although tickets can be bought on the day. Please call or speak to a member of staff at the Visitor Entrance to book your place.
Route Departing from the Visitor Entrance, John will lead the tour through the gardens towards Exbury House. Attendees will then enter some of the private areas of Exbury, still occupied by the Rothschild family, through the Italian Garden (not open to the public) and round to the old workshop. The group will then pass the Nissen hut and proceed to the actual crash site!
